A Snapshot into All Radio Listening

49.2 million listeners or 90% of the UK 15+ population are tuning into their favourite radio station each week - on average, we listen to radio for 20.8 hours per week.  

The share of all radio listening via a digital device is now at 50.9%! This is the first time that audiences listening via a digital device has pushed its way over the line vs traditional devices. This has to be the dominating headline for this quarter’s RAJAR.

In an average week, digital listening accounts for 521 million hours; DAB has a 72% share of digital listening hours, digital TV has 9% and online has 18%.

More than 3 in 5 people are now tuning in via a digital enabled device. As we see the increase in DAB radio in home and in car, this way of listening will continue to grow.

National Reach:

The headlines just keep hotting up! Global’s Heart brand now leads over BBC Radio 1. This is the first time ever that a commercial brand has increased its audience above the BBC Radio 1's. Heart has increased its weekly reach to 9.5million listeners whereas the BBC Radio 1's dipped from 9.8 to 9.4 million listeners per week. Congratulations Heart!

There’s also some good news for Capital Xtra, who have added half a million listeners nationally and have almost doubled their audience - going from 380,000 per week to 709,000 per week in London. talkRADIO will also have a good morning as they have increased their audience by 30%, Absolute 90’s now have 1.5m listeners per week, Kisstory is still the digital fave with 1.9m listeners per week. RadioX, Magic, MiSoul and LBC have also had good increases in hours and/or reach.

Capital FM is now London’s radio station of choice at breakfast with the highest reaching audience, overtaking Kiss this quarter.

Scotland Q1/2018

Scotland’s Clyde 1 and Capital saw a decrease in audiences this quarter. Good news for Global though as Capital is now number 1 in Scotland. Heart increased in audience reach to 420,000 listeners per week and Smooth has also taken the lead over Forth 1.
