This week, Jack FM Berkshire follows in the footsteps of its Jack brethren to become Sam FM Thames Valley. After being taken over by parent company, Celador Radio, Jack FM stations in Swindon, Bristol, Hertfordshire and the South Coast have rebranded as Sam FM. The only Jack FM station remaining is in Oxford.

The station has confirmed that “despite the new name, it will play the same music”.

Radio Caroline (previously regarded as the most infamous Pirate Radio station) has been granted a full time AM broadcast licence for the first time since its launch in the 1960s.

Back in the 1960s, Radio Caroline was among those stations being illegally broadcast on medium-wave frequencies from ships off the UK coast. To get Caroline on air, a 150ft antenna mast was mounted to a Dutch trawler with one goal in mind - to play pop music all day.

Pirate radio sprang up as an antidote to the BBC, which in those days played very little music. It was Pirate radio that brought the music of The Rolling Stones and The Who to the masses. Its popularity also led to creation of Radio One, the BBC’s official alternative to Pirate stations.

Global, home to radio stations such as Capital, Heart and Classic FM, has tuned into the revenue opportunities of video and are on the money. 

Their video team has grown from 6 to 25 staffers, bringing on board former producers from the BBC and YouTube. Now, each month, across brands, Global’s video team creates up to 600 original videos with music heavily featuring. Videos are also edited for platforms - for example, videos on the the current-affairs talk station, LBC, have been particularly successful on Facebook in the past year with 18.3 million video views on Facebook in May.

Oliver Deane, Global’s commercial digital director, stated that, "these videos generate around 40 million monthly, 30-second non-skippable pre-roll impressions on Global’s sites".

IPA has issued a formal letter to giants, Google and Facebook, instructing them to improve their standards to an industry acceptable standard.

IPA director general, Paul Bainsfair, outlined three urgent points to get themselves up to scratch, including brand safety, video audience measurement and video viewability.

Bainsfair reiterated that:

“As the two biggest online video suppliers, YouTube and Facebook have a responsibility to ensure the best possible standards for advertising on their platforms.”

The 170 million user music platform, SoundCloud, has secured $169.5 million (£130.2m) in funding from the investment company Temasek.

The platform will be taken over by Former Vimeo CEO Kerry Trainor, as chief executive. She said:

“I’m very excited to join this talented team and build the next chapter of growth around SoundCloud’s mission to empower audio creators” and “I look forward to sharing more about our plan and path forward in the months ahead”.

The funding will enable the struggling music platform to maintain its independence.
